3 Inexpensive Way to Boost Your Small Business Team's Morale

Rewards don't always have to be expensive and sometimes intangibles are more important to members of a team. At Intuitive Edge we focus our attention on all types of companies, but we have a soft spot for small businesses since we too are working through the challenges of being a small business. There are some easy ways to engage your employees and boost productivity that any company can utilize.

According to a study done by the University of Warwick, happy employees are 12% more productive than unhappy employees. Professor Andrew Oswald said, “Companies like Google have invested more in employee support and employee satisfaction has risen as a result. For Google, it rose by 37%, they know what they are talking about. Under scientifically controlled conditions, making workers happier really pays off.”

Inc.com came up with 6 low-cost ways to motivate your small team, but I found three to be specifically insightful.

1. Say "thank you" often. In my experience it seems as though companies both large and small forget their manners. Thank yous are rarely given in a sincere way and employees rarely feel as though their work matters. I recently spoke with a friend who expressed concerns that her/his company was never truly grateful for the inordinate amount of hours she/he put into the company. She/he noted a simple thank you or a free catered meal would go a long way for her/him feeling appreciated

2. Encourage failure. "At my company, we connect over a weekly Friday morning "Experiments Meeting." We review our innovative tests and present data-driven results. Sometimes they're successful, and sometimes they're not," Craig Bloem, Founder and CEO, FreeLogoServices.com, wrote in his Inc.com article. It's all about providing a safe space for your employees to try and fail, after awhile there will be a whole lot of try and succeed.

3. Give simple savory rewards. Food is worth more than words or pictures. Find out what your team enjoys snacking on or eating and reward them with those treats whenever something positive happens in the office. Did your team close a big account? Pizza for the office! Is your company finally in the black? Cookies and candy for everyone.

It isn't difficult to make your team happy, the little things truly do count and studies have shown that happier teams are more productive. And having a more productive team usually leads to increased profits.
